RBS Student AccountThe RBS account is very closely linked with Natwest so their terms & conditions are actually be very similar but there are some small differences.

The RBS 0% overdraft is tiered over the first year as well as throughout your time at university. The increases are guaranteed as long as you make sure that you deposit up to £750 every 6 months.

You will qualify for an increase based on past spending and your current credit rating. Check your credit rating with a free trial at Credit Reports Matter.

Year 1 – £1,000 (Term one £500; Term 2 £750)

Year 2 – £1,250

Year 3 – £1,500

Year 4 – £1,750

Year 5 – £2,000

Going over the limit

If you go into your unarranged overdraft you will be charged a large amount so make sure that you talk to a bank advisor before you get into any trouble. You could also switch your overdraft to another account that offers a larger 0% interest which you can check in our best student accounts guide.

Un-arranged – £6 per item.

RBS student freebies

RBS have a discount card and £100 off of ASUS laptops to all of their customers.

You also get a 4 week travel package (provided that you have been with them from before May 2012). The package includes a 4 year 16-25 railcard as well as a 4 week bus pass to travel around Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Galsgow.

The RBS student bank account has great online banking as well as a supporting app where you can keep track of all of your spending.

You can also bank over the phone and access your account from almost any cash machine for free.

How to open an RBS account

To open the account you must:

  • have lived in the UK and been a permanent resident for 3 years
  • be a UK national studying full-time min
  • Have a university confirmation letter
  • Pass a credit rating test.
