Freebies

Last updated: 20th August, 2012

Bank Account FreebiesWhen looking at all of the banks on offer to students, you might want to take into consideration the freebies that are on offer.

It is well known that students love freebies and banks tend to offer a lot to try and lure them in. In the past, banks have used free railcards or even laptop insurance to try and lure students. Some have even been known to use free sweets at their local branches during Fresher’s week.

It’s really important to remember that these offers can sound tempting but you shouldn’t let freebies or similar offers sway your decision. The value of the gift may be £50, but the bank offering it may not have a great overdraft option or may have poor customer service.

You should use it as part of your overall decision on choosing a bank and not on its own.

Student Account Freebies for 2012

Let’s take a look at what freebies are on offer to students this year in the UK. As well as freebies, there are exclusive offers that are offered by some of the student accounts. We have listed these below.

RBS – £100 of ASUS laptops. A 4 Year 16-25 Railcard and 4 week free bus pass for Aberdeen, Edinburgh or Glasgow (current customers only).

Natwest – £100 of ASUS laptops. A 4 Year 16-25 Railcard (current customers only).

Halifax – Personalised Card

Lloyds TSB - 3 year NUS Extra card. £75 off an STA holiday.

Barclays – Phones4U deals. Personalised debit card.

HSBC – None

Co-Op – None

As you can see, the freebies this year are pretty much few and far between. Many students will be aware of the famous Natwest offer of a free railcard but unfortunately this is no longer available to new customers. When asked to comment, Natwest said that they are more keen to focus their promotions on the overdraft available as opposed to freebies.

*All of these offers were correct nationwide at the time of writing this article. If you know of any other offers or student account freebies (whether national or local) then please let us know.
